This paper poses the question: ‘can energy innovation initiatives in Innovation Playgrounds foster a new ‘energy urbanity’ through active citizen participation transition?’ The concept of ‘Innovation Playgrounds’ and an accompanying Framework are described linked to implementation evidence EU H2020 positive research project +CityxChange, related emergent two cities: Limerick, Ireland Trondheim, Norway. purpose study is demonstrate that spatially clustered urban areas involving contribute for transition. methods based on comparative case approach close observation sites, with focus Playground’ area each city. article’s three main conclusions are: facilitates models community around innovation; suggests type engagement information-rich, blended, action-led, citizen-focused, spatial; paradigm transition can be proposed.
